Thanksgiving Fire Safety Tips

As the holiday season soon approaches, Tobin Restoration hopes families will take extra fire safety precautions to ensure a safe and accident-free Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Fire risks tend to increase during the holiday season, especially on Thanksgiving, so it is important to be cautious during the holiday festivities.

According to the U.S Fire Administration, 28.6 percent of all fires start from cooking accidents, and 67 percent of cooking fires start when either the food or the cooking ingredients catch fire.

To prevent the risk of increased fire dangers during the holiday season, here are a few safety precautions to keep in mind.

1. Be attentive and aware in the kitchen. According to the US Fire Administration, the majority of the fires started in the kitchen were a result from from unattended cooking.
2. Frying food is one of the greatest risks of fires starting, because of oil spills. Avoid overfilling the fryer pot to prevent these types of spills.
3. Thaw the frozen turkey 24 hours before cooking, to eliminate chances of overfilling.
4. Make sure the turkey fryer is placed in an isolated area outside and away from the house, small children, animals or flammable objects.
5. Beware of hot temperatures of the turkey fryer, and do not touch the sides, the lid, or the handles without properly insulated oven mitts.
6. Keep an eye on the thermometer and be sure the fryer does not overheat. The fryer itself does not self-regulate the temperature, and an overheated turkey fryer could combust and ignite.
7. Be prepared if an accident does occur and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Be familiar how to use the extinguisher. Do NOT throw water on the fire. If an extinguisher is not available, baking soda may be used in replacement.
8. Sometimes due to oil spills, the turkey fryer could catch fire. For big fires, call the fire department and do not try to put it out on your own.
9. Check fire alarms regularly to make sure they work properly. Fire alarms may need new batteries, or need the batteries to be checked to make sure the batteries are properly connected.
