Don’t think a flood will never happen to you. Even if you live outside a floodplain or far from a river or canal, you can be affected by flooding. The term flood entails more than rivers overflowing or too much rain.
At Tobin Restoration, we deal with floods daily. Water can overflow from a toilet or sink, pipes can burst, or appliances can leak, causing a flood of water to cover your floors, absorb into the walls, and drip from your ceiling.
Water follows the path of least resistance and will go under floorboards, into heat registers, down through the subfloor, and run down lower level ceilings and walls.
Idaho Falls Home Restoration
Sometimes cleaning up a flood requires more than just removing the surface water. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) explains:
“Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. This damage at a minimum, will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate where costly repairs are required.”
If you experience a flood, it is important to remove all the water, not just the water that you can easily see. Moisture left under surfaces can cause further damage and unwanted odor in your home.
IICRC certified restorers know how to find and remove water and restore your home to its previous state. “More than just removing excess water, IICRC-certified restorers have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to pre-loss conditions. Through timely response and the careful monitoring of water damage, mold, and other health issues can be prevented. If water damage has been present too long, mold will occur.” http://www.iicrc.org/consumers/care/water-damage/
